Materials Science & DEN

Do you often wonder while shopping what that little number with "DEN" behind it actually means? Or why some tights are shiny while others are completely matte? Here we'll simply explain the most important hosiery vocabulary so you can always find the exact model that perfectly matches your outfit.

What does DEN actually mean?

DEN stands for "Denier" and is a traditional unit of measurement from the textile industry. It indicates how many grams 9,000 meters of the yarn used weigh. Sounds complicated? For you as the wearer, it's quite simple! The rule of thumb is: The lower the DEN number, the finer and more transparent the material. The higher the number, the thicker and more opaque it is.

Our Little DEN Guide

  • 5 to 15 DEN (Ultra-Sheer): This is like a delicate "makeup for your legs." These stockings are almost invisible, perfect for hot summer days or open-toed shoes. They give the leg just a hint of color and conceal minor imperfections.
  • 20 to 40 DEN (Semi-Sheer): The absolute all-rounder for everyday wear and the office! They reliably conceal small flaws while still allowing the skin to show through subtly and elegantly. Ideal for transitional seasons.
  • 50 to 90 DEN (Opaque): The perfect choice for cooler autumn days. They are (almost) completely opaque, significantly more resistant to snags, and provide an even, rich color appearance on the leg.
  • 100+ DEN (Winter & Thermal Tights): Absolutely opaque and wonderfully warming. Ideal for freezing winter days, allowing you to wear skirts and dresses even in sub-zero temperatures.

Polyamide and Elastane – The Dream Team

Besides the DEN number, the material is crucial for the wearing comfort. Our products mostly consist of a combination of these two high-tech fibers:

  • Polyamide (Nylon): This is the main component of almost every fine pair of tights. It is extremely lightweight, tear-resistant, and abrasion-resistant. It provides the soft, classic feel.
  • Elastane (e.g., Lycra®): The absolute magic fiber for the perfect fit! Elastane ensures that the tights hug your curves like a second skin, spring back to their original shape after wearing, and – very importantly – don't sag at the knees or roll down at the stomach.

Did you know? Matte vs. Shiny

You'll often see the terms "matte" or "shiny" (glossy) used. Shiny tights reflect light. This often makes the leg appear more shapely, sculpted, and very glamorous – perfect for evening wear. Matte tights absorb light, making them look extremely natural and are the favorite for an understated, flawless business look.
